"Dixon was closing there for a while so I was just trying to manage the gap and the tyres.
"The Chevy engine was mega today."
Dixon moves closer to the lead of the championship and is now just 10 points off the lead but he admits he was battling a car that just didn't have what he needed today.
"We kind of knew that in the warm-up and we were hoping maybe with the warmer ambiance we might pick up some understeer," Dixon said.
"The first stint on the reds was extremely tough.
"It was a good day for points. A huge congrats to Will."
"We didn't win the first race at Indy so hopefully we can win the second one in a couple of weeks.
"Our package for the big one should be stellar."
