Irish back Jared Payne has been forced to retire because of a head injury.
The 32-year-old Kiwi — who played for the Chiefs, Crusaders and Blues from 2007 to 2011 — will become Ulster's defence coach.
Payne, born in Tauranga, suffered the head knock late in the British and IrishLions match against the Chiefs in Hamilton last June. That turned out to be his last match.
"It's been a good ride but unfortunately every good thing has to come to an end," Payne said.
"I would like to thank all of the medical professionals who have supported me since my injury...I'm extremely grateful for your considerable care and attention.
"While I will undoubtedly miss the buzz of running out with mates every weekend, I have to listen to the medical advice and unfortunately give up the dream."
Payne played 20 test for Ireland. Any chance he had of playing against the All Blacks for the Lions last year was wrecked by the injury. He was not considered for the Hurricanes match — played between the first and second tests — because of headaches.
