Welcome to the Herald Sport Vault, a place where we will showcase our best pieces of journalism of the 151-year history of the New Zealand Herald newspaper.

New Zealand has a rich sporting history and the Herald has been alongside our teams and individuals reporting on their exploits every step of the way.

DIVE INTO THE HERALD SPORT VAULT

Every Thursday afternoon we will unlock stories from the Herald archives with a number of different Vault features:

First Mention showcases the first time a sportsperson was mentioned in the Herald. From a young Takapuna Grammar batsman averaging 97.27 in the 1940 season to a seven-year-old golfer skipping down the fairway at the women's national amateur championships, the stories give a glimpse into the likes of Bert Sutcliffe and Lydia Ko before they were 'cricket great Bert Sutcliffe' and 'golfing phenom Lydia Ko'.

Spotlight will break down an event or season combining all the best stories on a certain topic. Our first spotlight is on the All Whites' 2010 World Cup campaign.

Back in the Day dives deep into the archives before colour television and decimal currency. From Bob Charles bagging a massive payday of $US625 to the eloquent 1700-word rugby match reports from the great TP McLean.

Herald Classics are the pick of stories from some of New Zealand's greatest sporting moments. Michael Campbell's win at Pinehurst No 2, rowing eight winning gold in Munich and Dan Carter's perfect performance against the 2005 Lions to name a few.

Herald Classics also includes our best interviews and journalism including Paul Yandell tracking down Keith Murdoch in 2001, the late Jan Corbett on then-Alinghi skipper Russell Coutts in 2003 and Chris Rattue escaping 'hellhole' Johannesburg during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
