It might not have quite the same traditional following as some matches on the other side of the bridge, but there was no doubting the elation for the Takapuna Grammar players and their supporters as they scored their first win over rivals Westlake BHS since 1978 on Saturday.

Playing away and with a 27-year drought bugging them, few would have given the Alyx Hodgson-led Takapuna first XV much hope, especially as they had been beaten 33-0 in the first round.

The odds of TGS getting up would have been even longer at halftime as the visitors trailed 13-5.

Centre David Hunter crossed for Takapuna's only first half points but they came back with a strong second half effort, led by loose forward Leigh Thompson. He capped a solid game by scoring the only try of the second spell as TGS took their hard-fought but deserved victory.

Thompson was well-supported by fellow loose forwards Henry Poor and Alex Chandler with Josh Blucher too playing a strong hand.

Wing Jason O'Toole booted over three penalties and a conversion.

The home side were restricted to just three points in the second half as TGS stormed home. They also lifted the Woodhouse Shield held by WBHS since early 2005.

Massey ran out comfortable 24-10 winners over Rangitoto to hold top spot by a point from Rosmini who beat bottom-placed Orewa 22-0.

Netball

After five rounds of the premier grade the competition remains close with Mt Albert Grammar, Auckland Girls Grammar and St Cuthberts locked in the lead.

Epsom GGS kept themselves within sight of the lead with their 32-22 win over Macleans College. Macleans are one of three teams yet to pick up a point and again came up short as young EGGS goal shoot Jessica Gray continued to impress in her first season in the role by landing 13 from 13 in the first half.

Rugby

A bonus point for scoring four tries in their 24-8 win over Sacred Heart allowed Auckland Grammar to break clear to a one point advantage over Kings and Mt Albert Grammar after six of the 11 rounds in the 1A championship. The big three of schools rugby have lost once this season as have St Peters who are two points back in fourth.

Kings overcame a determined De La Salle to win 17-3 after a late Andrew Barton try. Earlier, Shane Tasi had scored the only other try from a lineout drive.

Mt Albert Grammar had the biggest fright of the round, just getting home 10-9 over St Kentigern.

In a match, like all others, played in wet, heavy conditions, AGS overcame bottom-placed Sacred Heart. It was close at the break after AGS had scored two tries and Sacred Heart replied with a try and a penalty.

Led by strong games from captain Winston Stanley and halfback Sami Fisilau who scored two tries, AGS scored two unanswered close range tries in the second spell. David Thomas and Charlie Morpeth joined Fisilau on the try-scoring list. Ash Moeke added two conversions.

St Peters made good use of their home advantage in another game played in atrocious conditions to beat Kelston BHS 7-3. The only try of the match came early when Edmund Malo capitalised on a Kelston error. Sam Nash converted for 7-0. The only scoring in the second half was a Wayne Ngaluafe penalty for Kelston.

St Pauls shrugged off the difficult conditions to post the biggest win of the day running out 29-0 winners over Tamaki College. After leading 10-0 at the break, St Pauls maintained the pressure as their tight five, led by locks Liaki Moli and Afoa Leapepe and with good support from No 8 Sione Vea, controlled the game.

At first five-eighths, Isaia Tuifua kicked intelligently while for Tamaki prop Paea Manu and captain Antonio Stowers toiled tirelessly.

Soccer

Two wins in five days and 14 goals to two have carried Mt Albert Grammar to the top of the senior A1 table on goal difference from Auckland Grammar.

After their 8-0 win in Tuesday's catch-up game against St Peters, MAGS made the trip to Rangitoto College and came away 6-2 winners with burly striker Mark Withers banging home four goals.

The visitors were always in control from the time Josh Smith gave them their 21st minute lead. Withers then struck twice and Malcolm MacRae headed home a Skye Parmenter cross in the 43rd minute for a 4-0 halftime lead.

The home side got one back in the 62nd minute when a poor defensive header dropped into the mud and was whipped home.

Withers completed his hat-trick for 5-1 before Tim Schaeffers headed home past goalkeeper Arran Rowley. Withers completed the scoring in the 85th minute when he headed home a cross from substitute Sammy Ho.

Auckland Grammar, like MAGS, retained their unbeaten record with a battling 3-2 home win over Westlake BHS who are now four points off the pace in third.
