The biggest day in Auckland secondary school sport will have all the usual interest when Auckland Grammar and King's College go head-to-head this week.

The traditional rivalry starts tomorrow with the clash of the hockey 1st XIs at the Auckland Grammar turf, but the real focus will be at King's
on Saturday with the annual clashes in soccer and rugby.

The soccer kicks off at noon with unbeaten AGS starting slight favourites given their strong start to the season, which has them one point clear of Westlake Boys and King's after four rounds.

AGS warmed up for the game with a crushing 6-0 win away to St Kentigern last Saturday while King's were not as convincing in their 2-1 away win over St Peter's.

John Niyonsaba booted home from the penalty spot to give King's the lead. That was cancelled out quickly when Cody Patterson scored for St Peter's.

King's, on the back of some good work from stand-in goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic, eventually got home with a second-half goal from Freddie Baker.

Daniel Rowe scored a hat-trick for AGS and Kayne Vincent (2) and Jacob Mathews added the others.

Previously unbeaten Westlake Boys lost that record and their competition lead when beaten 2-0 at home by an impressive Mt Albert Grammar 1st XI.

Jonathan Raj headed home a Sky Parmenter cross to give the visitors their 13th-minute lead. Parmenter ran on to a good through ball from Mark Withers to score early in the second half.

It was a solid effort from MAGS, who won plenty of midfield ball with Troy and Josh Smith showing out, while up front Damien Fonoti always looked dangerous.

Tommy Smith battled bravely in the Westlake defence but it was not enough in conditions made difficult by the strong crosswind.

The scheduled game between Rangitoto and Macleans was postponed when no referee turned up.

Curling

Birkenhead College continue to set the pace. In the last game of the night at Paradice Avondale, Birkenhead's Team Yim beat Rangitoto 7-4 with the scoreline flattering the winners.

Earlier, in a game between two Birkenhead sides, the Year 11 Team Cranswick, aided by three on the fourth end, went on to beat Year 10 Team Patel 8-2.

In the closest match of the night, Birkenhead's Team Seo took the early lead before falling behind 2-3 to Westlake Icebergs.

Holding three and the match on the last end, Birkenhead were denied when that was cut to one and the scores finished level at 6-6.

Papakura Mixed denied Birkenhead Mixed any points with their 8-2 win after leading 5-0 at one stage.

Multisport

Rebecca Spence bade farewell to secondary school competition in style with a big win in the duathlon championships at Maraetai Beach.

Spence relished the good conditions to head home the senior girls field by almost 6 minutes with visitor Sian Walker (Waikato Diocesan) taking second ahead of another Waikato competitor, Nicole Treweek.

Spence leaves Rangitoto College this year but not until she has contested a hectic international schedule with multisport and cycling events in Canada and Europe.

Ryan Sissons, too, was impressive in winning the senior boys title for Macleans College.

He was over a minute clear of long-time Auckland Grammar rival Tom Quirk, with Rosehill's Andrew Simpson a close-up third.

Strathallan College (Papakura) had a good day with victory in the junior and senior boys team events and Megan Blackett taking silver in the intermediate girls.
