KEY POINTS:

Winning the toss and electing to bat first was not a great call for Kelston BHS in the RH Marryatt Cup one-day final.

The damp pitch at Colin Maiden Park, which undid the KBHS batsmen, played into the hands of the St Kentigern bowlers initially and later their
batsmen, as they cruised to a seven-wicket victory and one-day 1A honours.

Led by Trent Cooper, 2-9 from 10 overs, and with Jonathan Hickey mopping up the tail with 3-9, Kelston struggled to reach 89 as the St Kentigern field supported their bowlers with some superb catches. Only Sheahan Huri (28) offered any resistance.

In reply, and after a 40-minute lunch break which allowed the pitch to dry, St Kentigern wasted little time in hitting the winning runs.

They were restricted early by some intelligent bowling from spinners Nathan Bell and Huri but the batsmen soon assumed control and won it in the 19th over with useful contributions from Ashwyn Herwels (23), Robert van Elling (24no) and Patrick Boyd (17no).

Chief executive

After five years as chief executive of ASB College Sport, Mike Thompson is moving on and starts the same role with New Zealand Squash next week.

In his time with Auckland SS Sport, Thompson has overseen a number of changes including addressing the poaching of top players from one school to another.

A replacement for Thompson, who was previously with Northern Districts Cricket and the Force 3 soccer federation, is expected to be known by the end of the month.

Cricket

WAIKATO

After holding the Dave Hoskin Trophy for almost 18 months, St Peters College have handed it on to Hillcrest HS, who were the previous holders.

In a low-scoring affair at St Peters, Hillcrest were always in control and won by four wickets to keep their semifinal hopes alive.

The home side were struggling from the outset at four for three and five for four, with only captain Fraser Kilgour offering any hope. He was eventually last out for 67. Dion Kirker was the best of the Hillcrest attack bagging 4-24 after doing the early damage.

St Peters' hopes of hitting back with the ball were soon dashed as Chris Jamieson and Oliver Leydon-Davis put on 55 for the first wicket. Hillcrest then lost wickets steadily and at 103-6 the home side were in with a chance until a couple of late boundaries got Hillcrest home.

St Peters still have a share of the lead but trail Hamilton BHS' 3rd XI and St Johns on run-rate as teams jockey for the semifinals.

Rugby

Keen for some early-season action at Waikato Stadium, an enthusiastic group at Hamilton BHS set out to get the chance to play on the hallowed turf by promoting a sevens tournament.

Their endeavours will be rewarded on Saturday when teams from 16 schools, including rugby heavyweights Kelston BHS, Auckland GS, Mt Albert Grammar, Palmerston North BHS, New Plymouth BHS and the hosts play a Supersevens tournament with games for both boys and girls in a quick-fire competition.

Co-hosted by the Waikato Rugby Union and Hamilton BHS, the tournament gives the opportunity for some good action in front of the expected big crowd.

Dragon boats

Crews from EGGS and Kaipara College will be out to defend their titles when the annual Auckland SS dragon boat festival hits the waters of the Viaduct Harbour on Sunday.

While EGGS (girls) and Kaipara College (mixed) will be chasing repeat victories, there will be a new winner in the boys division as that was not raced last year.

While there have again been huge entries for the mixed and girls' racing, only four crews will line up in the boys' division, with local hopes Northcote College and Kaipara College being challenged by Christchurch visitors Shirley BHS.

Racing will be hectic, with 40 22-strong crews (from squads of 25) chasing the spoils in a busy day's racing.

Water polo

After a series of narrow wins, Sacred Heart College turned in one of the better efforts of the premier season with a 9-3 win over Massey High.

It was Sacred Heart's best tally of the season and allowed them to join Westlake BHS - who thrashed St Kentigern 20-2 - and Rangitoto as semifinalists. Rosmini's 5-4 win over King's kept their top-four hopes alive but they face the tough task of needing to beat AGS to go through.

In an abbreviated round of matches - due to the Southern Cross international tournament - EGGS won a hard-fought battle with St Cuthberts 3-2 in girls' action while Rangitoto turned in their best effort of the season to topple Carmel 24-0.
