The net has been cast far and wide in the search for the players capable of bringing about the resurrection of New Zealand women's hockey.
Somewhat surprisingly, given the air of despondency after the disappointing showing at the Beijing Olympics, most players have put their hands up and
will attend the 47-player trials in Auckland from January 19-25.
The trialists, named by outgoing Black Sticks coach Kevin Towns after consultation with coaches after the recent National Hockey League, include 22 present or former internationals.
"I worked with the NHL coaches and asked them who they felt should be there," said Towns. "I admit I was a little surprised so many of the Beijing players made themselves available.
"One-by-one, they came back to me saying there was unfinished business and that they wanted to give it another go. That was very pleasing.
"While there might have been some suggestion they are glad to get rid of me, there was nothing in the post-Olympic review directly aimed at the coaching."
By the time of the trials it is planned the new coach will be in place.
Towns said that while he had not been privy to the list of applications, he said he understood four or five, including at least one from offshore, had been received.
Of the Black Stick Olympians, only Jaimee Provan (expecting her first child), Lizzy Igasan (getting married) and goalkeeper Anita Wawatai (injured) were not available.
