Tim Wilkinson has joined Ryan Fox by qualifying for the 118th US Open Championship after finishing second at the Woodmont Country Club Sectional Qualifier in Rockville today.
His two rounds of 68 and 70 (six-under par) were highlighted by a spectacular hole in one on the 6th hole during his
second round which launched him inside the all-important top four who booked their ticket to Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in under two weeks time.
36 holes were played at eleven venues overnight, one in England (where Fox qualified) and ten in the USA, for what is essentially the last opportunity for more than 800 players to secure one of the 71 remaining places available.
This is the second time in three years that Wilkinson has qualified for this event, after also showing his class when it counts at sectional qualifying back in 2016.
After losing his PGA Tour card for the season, this is a huge boost for the Manawatu professional who will be looking to make the most of the opportunity on the big stage.
This comes as a slight surprise for the Kiwi who missed the cut on the Web.com Tour this weekend, but 24 hours later and just 36 holes of golf, the 39-year-old will now tee it up with the best in the world as he looks to join 2005 US Open champion, Michael Campbell in the history books.
