When Lydia Ko met Jordan Spieth: Congratulations and mobs of adoring fans

The world's best two golfers met at Augusta National today - with reigning Masters champion Jordan Spieth heaping praise on Lydia Ko for her latest major victory.

Spieth, 22, who stormed to last year's Green Jacket with a history-making performance, had a chance meeting with Ko this morning at the traditional Par 3 contest, held the day before the Masters begins.

With the pair meeting for the first time, Spieth said he had no doubt the New Zealander was going to produce a fast finish in last week's ANA Inspiration to collect the second major title of her career - and become the youngest player in LPGA Tour history to secure two major championships.

"Congratulations, again, Lydia. Another major," Spieth said to the Kiwi.

"We were all tuned in last week from Houston. I was watching and we all knew it was going to happen."

Ko, who was mobbed by fans and players seeking autographs, said she was excited to meet the American star.

"Jordan's such a great player and I've always wanted to meet him," Ko told the New Zealand Herald.

"This is my first trip to Augusta and it's just amazing. Everything is perfect, you can see why everyone loves the Masters."

The fun didn't stop there for Ko either. The relaxed nine-hole Par 3 event often sees players invite friends and family to take a putt on the green.

But PGA Tour winner Na, who was playing the Par 3 with New Zealand's Danny Lee, went a step further and invited his caddy Ko to take a swing at the ninth hole - a 123m shot completely over water.

True to form, Ko grabbed Na's 9-iron and stuck her shot two feet from the pin, spinning the ball back and pulling up agonisingly short.

"That would have been my first hole-in-one ever," Ko said. "Wouldn't have been a bad way to do it at Augusta either."

World number one Ko also got to meet PGA Tour stars Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas.

Ko, who is in Augusta to collect an award from the Golf Writers Association of America, was invited by members to have her first look around the hallowed property today - and ended up caddying for American PGA Tour player Kevin Na in the Par 3 tournament, decked out in the iconic white boiler suit.

The Masters starts tomorrow morning (NZT), with world number 38 Lee paired with Scotland's Russell Knox and American Smylie Kaufman.
