The Eisenhower Trophy gets underway tonight at Carton House Golf Club as Daniel Hillier, Denzel Ieremia and Kerry Mountcastle take on the worlds best amateurs from 7:51pm NZT in Ireland.

We were lucky enough to chat to the players before they aim to repeat the history of Michael Campbell, Phil Tataurangi, Grant Moorhead and Stephen Scahill who claimed a famous victory at the World Amateur Team Championships in 1992.

The same rules apply in the mens championship as the womens Espirito Santo Trophy last week with the best two of three scores counting towards the team total.

NUMBER OF TEAMS:

A record-tying total of 72 teams have entered the 31st World Amateur Team Championship, tying the mark set in Turkey in 2012.

DEFENDING CHAMPION:

Australia is vying to become the first team to win consecutive WATC titles since the USA in 2012 and 2014. They stand second on the list of gold medals won to the USA (15) as well as total medals (25 USA, Australia 13).

HOST NATION:

Ireland is playing in its ninth World Amateur Team Championship with its first appearance in 2002. Before that players from Ireland had been on the Great Britain and Ireland team. Its bronze-medal tying finish in 2016 was its best.
