Aucklands Wenyung Keh has rallied in her final round of the Womens Amateur Asia-Pacific to finish joint runner-up after a thrilling four-way playoff at the Sentosa Golf Club this evening.
Kehs amazing round of four-under par was sparked by a birdie on the fourth, followed by an eagle on the
fifth to get heads turning and apply scoreboard pressure on eventual winner, Atthaya Thitikul of Thailand.
It was all going to script for Thitikul who held a three shot lead for the majority of the day before a double-bogey on 12 turned the championship on its head. This opened the door for Yuka Saso (PHI), Yuna Nishimura (JAP) and Keh who couldnt be separated after 72 holes.
"It was a great week and Im happy I gave myself a chance," said Keh.
"This was a new experience I can really learn from and I don't think Ive been in a four-way playoff before.
"I just wanted to enjoy myself this week, play on an amazing golf course and it just turned out really well."
Sadly for Keh, the runner-up gains entry to the Ricoh Womens Open final qualifier, which had to be decided on Amateur World Ranking points. This meant Yuka Saso claims this rare opportunity.
15-year-old Thitikul went wire-to-wire to create history at the inaugural Womens Amateur Asia-Pacific and gain entry into the HSBC Womens Champions, the ANA Inspiration and the Ricoh British Womens Open.
"Im so excited because this is the first year of this championship. Its so great that my name is the first one on the trophy," said Thitikul, who played her first LPGA event at the Honda LPGA Thailand last February, when she just tuned 14.
"Now, Im so excited to play in two more majors. Im really looking forward to returning to the British Open and I would like to make the cut this time, but my main objective is always to play happy and gain more experience."
This week has been an amazing success thanks to the R&A and APGC and we will return to this fantastic venue in October where the Sentosa Golf Club plays host to the mens Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship.
