The first hole is a par-4 but Smith took a nine for a nightmare start. He followed that up with a bogey before rattling off a hugely impressive five birdies in seven holes to make the turn in just one over par - 36 strokes.
Smith then went even better, holing his tee shot at the par-3 10th for a magnificent hole-in-one. A rare par followed at the 11th and, somehow, a round that had started with a quintuple bogey had turned into one that saw him one under par through 10 holes.
A bogey followed at the 12th, but no disaster. Alas, that was to come at the next hole. On the par-5 13th - described as nothing more than 'a driver and a 9-iron' by one fellow competitor - Smith took an eye-watering 11 strokes for a sextuple bogey.
Despite reeling from this almighty blow, Smith dropped just two further shots in his final five holes to come back in 43 shots for a round of 79 - eight over par.
"This would've led to a difficult post round conversation with the coach I imagine...." joked European Tour pro Eddie Pepperell on Twitter.
But Smith's playing partner, Mathew Webb of Bedlingtonshire Golf Club, revealed that the man himself had kept his sense of humour despite the chaos of his scorecard.
"He's a good lad banter all the way," said Webb. "When he made the 1 he went wild then after the 11 I said "I haven't seen 3 1's on a card before"."
