Golf: Smail fires in Japan

New Zealand No 2 David Smail has fired a four under par 67 at Shishido Hills in round two of the Citibank Cup on the Japan Golf Tour to climb into a share of 10th place.

The five time winner on the tour, who opened with a one over par 73, made six birdies and two bogeys to get within five shots of leader Kyung-Tae Kim.

Smail has endured an up and down season in Japan, where he has made the cut in three from six events with a best finish a tie for 20th at the Tsuruya Open.

Compatriot Richard Lee had a round to forget as he carded a seven over 79 to post a 10 over par total and miss the cut for the second week in succession.

Meanwhile, Michael Campbell has missed the cut by one shot at the Wales Open after carding a four over par 75 at the Celtic Manor Resort.

He slipped 45 places from a share of 30th to 75th to miss the weekend for the eighth time in nine starts this season on the European Tour.

With eight holes to play, Campbell was safely inside the cut-line but he made a bogey on the 12th and a double bogey on the 14th to miss out by one.

The 43-year-old, who is preparing to play the US Open at in San Francisco later this month, needs to find some form ahead of the year's second major championship.

On the Nationwide Tour, both Tim Wilkinson and Steve Alker look likely to miss the cut at the Rex Hospital Open.

Wilkinson, who is currently 50th on the Order of Merit, shot a two under par 69 but it probably isn't enough as he currently sits outside the projected cut by two shots with play suspended.

Alker, who is 42nd on the money list, also looks likely to miss the weekend. The Hamilton professional is even for the tournament with 11 holes to play.
