Golf: Shirley to host $125,000 event

Christchurch's top golf course, Shirley, will host a new professional tournament in April.

The $125,000 Christchurch City PGA Championship, from April 5 to 8, will be the third of 10 development tour events scheduled by the PGA Tour of Australasia and PGA Australia.

Dunedin will also host one of the tour events - a previously announced $125,000 event at the Chisholm Park links course from March 29 to April 1.

Trevor Herden, the PGA Australasian Tour director of operations, said the development tour was "geared towards attracting, educating and providing experience for the next generation 'young-gun' golfers, similar to the successful Nike [now Buy.com] Tour in the US."
