Kevin Chun, a 15-year-old from the Titirangi club, yesterday became the youngest winner of the Auckland Anniversary golf tournament at Akarana.
He fired a final round of three-under 67 for a 54-hole total of 216 and a one-shot margin over Akarana player Peter Kim.
Chun, who enters the fifth form
at Westlake Boys' High today, had to wait patiently in the clubhouse while Kim and his Akarana clubmate, Mark Pirihi, tried to better his total.
Kim fell behind with bogeys on the 16th and 17th and could not make the birdie on the last he needed for a tie.
Pirihi needed a par on the last to force a playoff, but bunkered his second and then three-putted for a double-bogey.
Pupuke golfer Joshua Carmichael, who shot 65 in the second round, was leading the tournament with nine holes to play.
But he had a triple-bogey on the 10th and finished third equal with Pirihi.
In perfect conditions yesterday many of the field struggled with the fast greens, and par scores were few and far between.
One of the more impressive was the tall Maungakiekie lefthander Mike Leitch, who won this tournament 32 years ago when it was first held.
Leitch began with a 78 on Saturday, but had par rounds on Sunday and yesterday and finished seventh equal.
