Tringale has a three-shot lead over Gary Woodland (72) and Doug Ghim, whose 69 raised hopes he could earn one of three spots available for the British Open.
The Scottish Open is the first time the PGA Tour is co-sanctioning a European tour event, and it led to the strongest field in tournament history, featuring 14 of the top 15 players in the world ranking. Tringale won't have to contend with half of them.
Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, the world's No. 1 player, was among seven of those players who can get an early start on the Old Course at St. Andrews. They all missed the cut.
Most of them got caught on the bad end of the draw. There was only a wee breeze on Friday when Tringale opened with a 61 and Woodland shot 64. By the afternoon, the wind was gusting to 48kph, and the difference was just over three shots.
Saturday gave a steady dose of strong wind, typical for these parts and still playable considering the design of the links-like course that allows for the ball to be played along the ground.
Scheffler (72) was on the good side of the draw and got a taste of quirky bounces, finding pot bunkers and other trouble that kept him from making up ground. PGA champion Justin Thomas had a 77 and missed the cut by seven shots.
Alker takes share of lead in Senior Players Championship
Steven Alker shot a bogey-free 4-under 66 on Saturday for a share of the second-round lead in the Senior Players Championship with Joe Durant, Tim Petrovic and Alex Cejka.
A three-time winner this season and the Charles Schwab Cup points leader, Alker had three straight birdies on Nos. 14-16 on his first nine and added another on the par-5 second on Firestone's South Course.
"First of all, it's nice to have a bogey-free round at Firestone" the 51-year-old New Zealander said. "It's that type of golf course, you've just got to keep going. But kind of everything, drove it in the fairway for the most part today and hit a lot of greens except for the last few. I scrambled nicely the last couple holes.
"Overall, just a solid day. Kind of kept my nose clean and haven't done too much wrong. A few more putts would be nice, but yeah, at Firestone, just fairways and greens around here."
Alker won the Senior PGA Championship in late May in Michigan for his first senior major victory.
"Just getting comfortable in this company," Alker said. "I think that's the biggest thing. Just like learning to play my game. It's been hard to watch these guys but just stay in my skin and play my game."
The leaders were at 6-under 134.
Geary set for PGA Tour first
Kiwi Josh Geary looks set to make the cut on the PGA Tour. Geary carded a second round of five-under 67 at the Barbasol Championship, an alternate-field event with lower status due to the stars playing in Scotland.
Geary sits in a tie for 47th at six-under, two shots inside the current cut line, but with several players left to finish their second rounds the cut is predicted by Data Golf to have a 98.2 per cent chance of falling at six-under, and allow Geary to play the weekend.
It would be Geary's first made cut in a PGA Tour event. Canada's Adam Svensson led at 15-under, two shots clear of Trey Mullinax who had five holes left when play was suspended due to darkness.
