Southland No 1 Vaughan McCall continued his good form with a top 15 finish at the Scottish Open stroke play championship at Kilmarnock overnight (NZT).
The 20-year-old from the Gore Golf Club, who earlier this year became the first golfer in 24 years to win both the New Zealand strokeplay and amateur titles, shot a three under par 70 in the final round to climb 28 places into a share of 14th.
McCall lost touch with the leaders in the second and third rounds, but rallied in the final round with three birdies in a bogey free round to finish the tournament on even par.
He is playing the British amateur events for the first time and last week enjoyed a good start to his Northern Hemisphere summer when he finished runner-up at the Wales amateur stroke play championship.
Bay of Plenty representative Sam Davis also enjoyed a fine event in Scotland. He carded a two under 71 in the final round to also finish on an even par total and a share of 14th place in the international field.
The other New Zealand golfers in the field - Ben Campbell, Blair Riordan, Daniel Pearce and Craig Hamilton - all missed the cut of the top 41 players after two rounds.
The six Kiwi amateurs playing in Scotland are looking for good performances to press their claims for the New Zealand team to contest the Eisenhower World Team's Championship in Turkey in September.
