Golf: Lee fighting for his card in the Fall Series

New Zealand golf No 1 Danny Lee has made a steady start to the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open as he fights for his card on the PGA Tour.

The 21-year-old Rotorua professional, who is currently 169th on the PGA Tour money list, needs to climb inside the top 125 over the next four events of the Fall Series.

He has opened with a two-under par 70 at the TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, Nevada to be in a share of 41st place and eight shots back from American Ryan Moore (61).

Meanwhile, on the European Tour Michael Campbell has fired a superb five-under par 67 at the Old Course of St Andrews to be in a share of 19th place at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.

The tournament is staged over three courses - the Old Course at St Andrews, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie.

Campbell, whose best result for 2012 is a tie for 11th at the French Open, reeled off six birdies and a bogey to be seven shots back from South African Brenden Grace who opened with an incredible 12-under 60 at Kingsbarns.

Campbell has fond memories of the Home of Golf after almost winning the Open Championship there in 1995.

On the web.com Tour, Steven Alker and Tim Wilkinson are struggling at the Neediest Kids Championship in Maryland.

Hamilton pro Alker has carded a three-over par 73 at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm to be in a share of 94th place.

Manawatu professional Tim Wilkinson also carded a three-over par 73 to be in the same position.

Over in Japan, David Smail and Gareth Paddison are off the pace at the Canon Open.

Smail, who is currently 52nd on the money list and needs to finish inside the top 70 to retain his card, shot a three-over par 75 to be in a share of 85th place after round one.

Wellington professional Paddison, who is making a rare appearance on the Japan Golf Tour, also signed for a three-over par 75.

The Kiwis need a low number tomorrow to make the cut of the Canon Open.
