Golf: Kiwis watch review June 20

The US Open

For the 116th US Open we had the chance to see two New Zealanders in action with Danny Lee and Tim Wilkinson both entered in the 156 man field.

After what was a very promising start from Lee where he ended round one in a tie for second, things slowly turned to custard and he finished with rounds of 77, 74, and 74 to drop back to a tie for 57th.

Wilkinson was two shots in the rear fishing tied for 61st in his debut Major Championship. Making the cut would have been goal one for the man from Manuwatu and he did just that with rounds of 71, 75, 75 and 75 which showed some degree of consistency.

There was obviously no shortage of drama on the final day as DJ, Dustin Johnson finally won his maiden Major Championship by three strokes.

Social media has been erupting with opinions about Johnson's ball moving on the fifth hole, but we won't let that detract from what was a clinical victory to a player who deserved it the most. Finishing in style, Johnson stiffed his approach on the last to seal the deal and win the 116th US Open, hosted by Oakmont Country Club.

LPGA Tour

Lydia Ko has once again recorded another top five finish on the LPGA Tour, this time at the Meijer LPGA Classic.

Ko was three shots behind Sei Young Kim and Carlota Ciganda who had to fight it out in a playoff with Kim making a 19th hole birdie to lock away the trophy.

Consistency was the theme for Ko as she carded rounds of 67, 68, 67 and 68 to secure her seventh top five from only 12 outings in 2016.

The world number one will now turn her attention to the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship this weekend and attempt to improve on her 2015 performance where she finished in a tie for sixth.

European Tour

Ryan Fox has sparked back to life with his first top 10 of the season finishing tied seventh at the Najeti Open in France over the weekend.

At a total of four under par (leader was nine under) he was joined by nine other golfers on the same score to shave a few dollars off his prize money, but Fox will be more focussed on the direction of his game and whether he can add to this result.

Webb.com Tour

Steven Alker has enjoyed his week at the Nashville Open finishing in a tie for 17th. Alker was still 12 shots back from leader James Driscoll, but a top 20 is certainly a good boost for the Kiwi veteran as he looks to build on this and slowly get closer to the PGA Tour dream once again.

Josh Geary couldn't quite get out of first gear as he missed the cut by just the one stroke to complete another tough week on tour.
