New Zealand golfers Mathew Perry and Fraser Wilkin have both missed the cut at the prestigious Western Amateur Championship at the Exmoor Country Club in Illinois overnight. (NZT)
Royal Auckland's WIlkin, who won the Muriwai Open on the Charles Tour in May, carded rounds of 78 and 74 to signfor an eight over-par total and miss the cut for the final two rounds of the stroke play by nine shots.
Wilkin had three birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey in his second round to finish tied 124th.
Compatriot Perry, who was recently named in the New Zealand team to contest the Eisenhower Worlds Amateur Team Championship, improved almost 20 places in the second round with an even-par 72.
The former New Zealand Amateur Champion, who opened with a nine over par 81 to be in a share of 147th place, finished on a nine-over par total in a share of 128th place.
Perry will be encouraged by his second round effort that included one bogey and one birdie as he prepares for the pinnacle of amateur golf in Turkey.
The two round cut for the Western Amateur was made at the top 44 players and ties at one under par.
The remaining 44 players will play a further two rounds of stroke play ahead and the leading 16 players will contest the match play stage of the championship.
Back in 2008, New Zealand No.1 Danny Lee won both the stroke play and the Match Play of the Western Amateur on his way to becoming the first Kiwi amateur to hold the mantle of world No 1 amateur.
