Malcolmson is the son of former All White Sam Malcolmson, who was part of the 1982 World Cup side and now lives in Australia.
Stuart Malcolmson runs a golf operation near the Ellerslie Racecourse.
It has a golf range, a par-three course, and mini golf.
Malcolmson, who was born in Scotland, is in his sixth New Zealand Open.
He qualified this time by winning the NZ Order of Merit last year.
And while he has had similar rounds in past Opens, he saw his name on the leaderboard for the first time yesterday and finished the day tied in ninth equal place with six others.
"I'm definitely getting a photo of that leaderboard," said Malcolmson, a teaching professional for six years.
"I guess scoring better than Tiger is good. My aim in the next round is to have as much fun as I did today, and hopefully I'll make the cut."
