He sits a mere 18 shots behind co-leaders Abraham Ancer and Joaquin Niemann, with his round tied for the worst of the PGA Tour career.
There was no such disaster for Lydia Ko in the second women's golf major of the year.
Ko sits in a share of 19th after the first round of the US Open, carding three birdies and two bogies in her one-under 71.
Ko, whose best finish at the Open is a share of third in 2016, sits four shots off the lead, which is held by the trio of Ariya Jutanugarn, Jeongeun Lee and Sarah Jane Smith.
Also tracking solidly is the Kiwi duo of Ryan Fox and Josh Geary, at the Italian Open on the European Tour.
Fox sits at two-under, which usually would place him well up the leaderboard, but with everyone enjoying a fruitful day at the Brescian course, he finds himself in a share of 67th, needing a further strong round to make the cut.
He is one shot behind Geary, who shot a bogey-free three-under 68 to be in a share of 41st. In his first year on tour, Geary struggled initially, missing his first six cuts, but has found his groove recently, making the weekend in three of his last four tournaments.
A solid second round will result in another made cut, as it would for Ko and Fox, but Lee instead will only have pride to play for.
