Golf: Campbell climbs to 13th in Germany

Michael Campbell fired a four under par 68 in round two of the BMW International Open to climb almost 40 places into a share of 13th in Germany.

The former US Open champion showed signs of the Campbell of old as he played the front nine holes in three under par 33 at the Gut Larchenhof Golf Club in Cologne.

He mixed four birdies and three bogeys on the back nine to finish on four under and be well-placed at six under for the tournament.

Campbell, who with the round made just his second cut from 11 events this year, will begin round three five shots back from the leader Sweden's Joel Sjoholm.

It is promising turnaround from the eight-time winner on the European Tour, who has relocated to Switzerland to make a determined effort to get back to his best on the European Tour.

The 43-year-old Kiwi has a good chance to better his best performance for 2012, a tie for 63rd at the Malaysian Open in April.

Across the Atlantic on the PGA Tour, New Zealand No 1 Danny Lee carded an even par 70 in round two of the Travelers Championship in Connecticut to be in a share of 50th place

The former US Amateur champion, who shot a one under par 69 in round one, made his eighth cut in his maiden year on the PGA Tour.

Lee will begin round three eight shots back from current leader Fredrik Jacobsen of Sweden, who was nine under par after rounds of 65 and 66 before play was suspended due to inclement weather.

Lee, who is projected to rise to 146th on the Fed Ex Cup standings, had an eventful second round including six bogeys and six birdies as he dropped seven places on the leaderboard.

On the Nationwide Tour, Manawatu professional Tim Wilkinson fired a two under par 69 at the Wichita Open in Kansas to slip five places into a share of 38th place.

The former PGA Tour professional, who is currently 43rd on the Nationwide order of merit, made two birdies in a bogey free round at the Crestview Country Club to be seven shots back from American leader Jim Herman.

Hamilton professional Steven Alker, who is 51st on the money list, shot a two under 69 to finish on a three under par total and miss the cut by one shot.

The pair need to finish inside the top 25 on the order of merit to automatically qualify for the PGA Tour in 2013.

On the Japan Tour, Auckland professional Richard Lee carded an even par 72 to be tied 36th at the Mizuno Open. Lee, who is on a one under par total, is four shots back from Japan's Yui Ueda after rounds of 67 and 68.

David Smail had an even par 72 to sneak inside the cut line by one shot.
