Golf: Holten moves through Australian amateur champs

New Zealand's Mathew Holten progressed to the quarter-finals of the Australian amateur golf championships in Brisbane yesterday while compatriot Nicholas Davey came close to joining him before bowing out.

Holten had qualified fourth equal at the end of four rounds of strokeplay. He won his first elimination match 4 and 3 over Queensland's Ben Bloomfield and beat Victorian Ben Meyers 1 up in his second game. He will play Australian representative Adam Groom, of New South Wales today.

Davey beat Queenslander Bronson La Cassie 2 and 1 before losing to Queenslander Jon O'Sullivan on the fourth extra hole.

Defending champion Andrew Buckle moved smoothly into the quarter-finals.
