NEW ZEALAND OPEN
(Auckland)

World championships bronze medallists Dan Shirley and Sara Runesten-Petersen have taken another step on their way to winning the mixed title at the inaugural US$30,000 ($430,000) New Zealand Open in Auckland.

The pair beat Australians Raj and Renuga Veeran 15-2 15-9. They now play Australian fourth
seeds Stuart Brehaut and Tania Luiz in the last four.

New Zealand No 2 Rebecca Bellingham , who made the last 16 at the world champs last week, beat New Zealand under-19 rep, Michelle Chan 8-11 11-0 11-5 in 47 minutes.

Indonesian players Adriynati Firdasari and Maria Kristin Yulianti had wins over Kiwis Renee Flavell and Karen Tam respectively. They now face each other for a place in the final.

Australians Kate Wilson-Smith and Kellie Lucas caused an upset in the women's doubles, beating the Malaysian top seeds to set up a semi clash with Kiwi Commonwealth Games silver medallists Runesten-Petersen and Nicole Gordon.

Top seed in the men's singles and world No 17 Sairul Amar Ayob of Malaysia easily accounted for eighth seed, Stuart Gomez, while second seed Bobby Milroy of Canada had a tough win over Stuart Brehaut (Australia) 17-16 15-10.

Semifinal play starts at 2pm today at the Auckland Badminton Centre.
