BADMINTON
NORTH HARBOUR INTERNATIONAL

The old hands are still winning hands talent at the North Harbour Badminton International as the now retired husband and wife pair of Geoff and Rebecca Bellingham teamed up in first round of the mixed to defeat current national reps, Henry Tam and Renee Flavell in
a tough three set, 35 minute match.

Meanwhile, New Zealand team member and Commonwealth Games silver medalist, Dan Shirley combined with his sister Gabby to beat two fellow squad members, Kimberly Windsor(Southland) and Nathan Hamman in straight games in their side of the mixed draw.

Top seed John Moody cruised through his second round singles while Rachel Hindley did the same in the women's draw with a match up against Fiji's Karyn Whiteside in the quarters lined up next. Second seed Sutheaswari Mudukasan, of Malaysia, did not make an appearance allegedly because she was made to return to her home country after it was thought her performance at the previous week's international in Ballarat was not to standard. The default of the Malaysian was a bonus for talented new Kiwi representative Michelle Chan, who has a potentially good draw through to the semifinals.

Play continues with quarter and semifinals today and finals tomorrow at the North Harbour Badminton Centre.

Men, second round (prefix denotes seeding, NZ unless noted): 1-J. Moody bt B. Miller 21-4 21-8, J. Tho (Australia) bt C. Lee 21-12 24-22, K. Asuncion (Philippines) bt A. Casey (Scotland) 21-7 21-18, M. Hashim (Malaysia) bt J. Wu 21-12 21-14, S. Gomez (Australia) bt A. Dhoray 21-7 21-13.

Women, second round: 1-R. Hindley bt J. Hung 21-6 21-7, K. Whiteside (Fiji) bt K. Tayalan 21-15 21-13, M. Chan bt C. Chapple 21-7 21-18, M. Chan bt 2-S. Mudukasan (Malaysia) walkover.

Mixed, first round: C. Cooper/D. Cranston bt D. Forrest/D. Barry 21-20 21-14, G. Bellingham/R. Bellingham bt H. Tam/R. Flavell 13-21 21-16 21-18, D. Shirley/G. Shirley bt N. Hannam/K. Windsor 21-19 21-16.
