Pia Vlok’s breakout season has helped to carry the Wellington Phoenix into the A-League Women’s grand final, but the teenager plans to keep a cool head going into the biggest game of the year.
The forward has scored six goals for the Nix in her first season with the team,set up the goal which drew them level in their semi-final tie against the Brisbane Roar, earned her first call-up and scored her first goal for the Football Ferns, and has been nominated for the A-League women’s best young player award.
Despite all the success she’s seen in her short career, Vlok says she has managed to stay focused on what she needs to do to perform for the team.
“I think I’m dealing with it pretty well,” she said.
“I enjoy the compliments and stuff, but don’t get too excited and then just keep going and always want to do more and contribute.”
The 17-year-old praised her teammates for helping her with the attention she’s had and keeping everything pointed towards lifting some silverware at the end of the season.

“I think everyone’s pretty grounded and, for me, having some really experienced players to ask for guidance and stuff has been really helpful.
“So yeah, just getting around each other and helping each other out has really got us to where we are.”
Vlok suffered an ankle injury against Fiji during the Football Ferns World Cup Qualifier on April 10 and was in a race to be fit for the Nix’s semi-final first leg where she came on as a substitute.
“I did not think I would come on in that first leg, so even just to get on was great and the physios and everyone’s doing such a good job.
“I’m feeling good and ready for the upcoming game.”
Nearly 6000 people packed in to Porirua Park to watch Makala Woods score a 102nd-minute goal which sent the New Zealand side into its first Grand Final.
The Nix will play Melbourne City at AAMI Park on May 16 after the Australian side beat cross-town rivals Melbourne Victory 2-0 on aggregate in their semi-final.
