The Wellington Phoenix have cut ties with Chinese midfielder Leilei Gao.
Gao is free to pursue other opportunities after the Phoenix granted him a full release just eight games into his contract. While talented, Gao has been roundly criticised by fans and commentators alike for a lack of
effort.
Only a few weeks ago, former Phoenix captain Ross Aloisi described Gao as a flop. He told a Chinese journalist only a few weeks into the season that he saw the Phoenix as a stepping stone to Europe.
Meanwhile, Tony Lochhead, Tim Brown, Ben Sigmund, and Daniel have re-signed with the Phoenix for the next two years.
Michael Ferrante has signed on for another season.
