"Lia is filling Lochead's boots at LB. Meanwhile, Lochead is filling his pants at home," they wrote earlier in the game, referring to left-back Tony Lochhead, who missed the game due to illness.
Tony Pignata, the club's former chief executive, was not impressed.
"Really do we have to read tweets like this. Your not very funny. Bit of respect," he wrote on twitter.
Melbourne Victory fan Laurence R agreed.
"Phoenix Twitter person makes the club look very amateur. Bad, bad look for the club."
Although some followers appreciated the humorous tone of the updates, the person apologised after the game.
"Apologies for any offence caused with any of today's tweets. High spirits to see WP go 3rd. Seem to have split the audience."
David Dome, the club's head of marketing, told Fairfax Media the person, who he would not reveal, would no longer be used for live game updates.
"We gave clear directions on the Phoenix voice, which were not followed, so they will be relieved of their duties. We were pretty disappointed. The excuse they gave was that they got carried away on the day."
Mr Dome said the club "outsource" the task of game updates to fans. He said there were no formal complaints made to club, but agreed the comments went over the line.
The Phoenix play away to fifth place Melbourne Heart on Saturday night.
