Paul Ifill has retired from professional football.

The former Phoenix striker has made the announcement today, having not played for the Phoenix since rupturing his achilles in December 2013.

Despite constant rehab, Ifill says his injury hasn't improved to the level he hoped...

"I've got to a stage where it's not got any better over these last couple of months. I keep thinking it's going to, and it just doesn't respond.

"I've tried playing, I've tried pushing through the pain and doing extra rehab and it's just not responding in the right way."

Ifill says he's been able to play at an amateur level but trying to recover and train is almost impossible.

"To be able to go to a professional level and tell the coach I can train once a week and maybe play every now and again is not feasible, so unfortunately I'm going to have to call it a day."

Paul Ifill hopes to play for Team Wellington for the remainder of the ASB Premiership season.
