Soccer: Wainui topple Wests in ASB Chatham Cup first round

Wainuiomata were the star turn of the ASB Chatham Cup first round fixtures, bundling out three time winners Western Suburbs with a hard fought 1-0 win just outside the capital on Saturday.

Liam Bell's strike in the second half was the only scoring action of the game and saw the Capital Premier side through to Monday's second round draw at the expense of the Central League heavyweights.

Taupo's home victory over Northern League first division outfit Metro was arguably even better based on league places alone with two divisions separating the sides at the start of the day.

The hosts led 1-0 at the break thanks to Tim De Roo and Calum Christie's second half goal sealed the win despite Peter Wild scoring for the Aucklanders.

Fellow Waikato-Bay of Plenty federation league side Cambridge also toppled Northern League opposition taking Lynn Avon United to penalties and edging the vistors 4-2 in the shootout.

In other upsets, three unanswered goals from Waitemata City unceremoniously dumped Northern League Tauranga City United out of the 90 year old competition; Universities thumped Mainland Premier League club FC Twenty11 4-1 in Christchurch and Northern defeated Southern Premier League leaders Green Island 4-2 away in Dunedin.

In Hamilton there were narrow escapes for Melville who came from a goal down to beat plucky Ngongataha 2-1 and also Ngaruawahia who were pushed to the wire by Waikato Unicol before notching a 4-2 away win.

The fairytale ended for lowly ranked Puhoi Wolfpack who could not repeat their qualification round heroics and sunk to a 5-0 loss at Papakura City.

North of Auckland, 41 year old All Whites assistant Neil Emblen rolled back the years to score an extra time winner for Western Springs in Warkworth, and on the shore Forrest Hill Milford scored twice in extra time to outlast Waiuku in a thrilling 5-3 victory that included a Kelly Martin hat trick for the hosts.

Logan and Jamie Clark were the toast of the Papatoetoe side after the pair inspired a dramatic late comeback away to Mt Albert Ponsonby. Two goals down with 15 minutes remaining, Logan Clark pulled a goal back before Jamie netting both the 86th minute equaliser and the winner with four minutes left in extra time.

There were also four goal hauls to Matthew Burgess in Queen Park's 7-2 victory over Southend United in the Deep South and to Harry Gage in Albany's 7-0 drubbing of Drury.

Other big wins saw 2012 finalists Lower Hutt City dispatch Stokes Valley 11-0 and Olympic beat Marist 7-2 with hat tricks from Hamish Watson and Mikey Halikias respectively and in a pair of seemingly open matches Takapuna beat Claudelands Rovers 8-4 and Brooklyn Northern outgunned Greytown 10-4 in the Wairarapa.

Nelson College marked their involvement in the Chatham Cup with a 1-0 win over Richmond Athletic and fellow students Westlake Boys High School were emphatic in beating last year's Cinderella club Manukau City 7-0 powered by a Stuart Holthusen hat trick. Meanwhile Timaru Old Boy Pete Rae broke the Northern Hearts of his hometown club with all the goals in Otago University's 3-0 win.

The Royal New Zealand Air Force were another non-league side to progress into round two, beating Beachlands Mareatae 3-2 to keep their Chatham Cup dream alive but their Naval counterparts were not so fortunate, falling 6-2 to Fencibles on Sunday.

Also on Sunday, a late Chris Bryson winner saved North Shore United's blushes against Ranui Swanson handing the home side a hard fought 3-2 win, while 2011 Champions Wairarapa United saw off a late fight from Wellington United to start their campaign with a 2-1 victory.

The final of the ASB Chatham Cup is scheduled for September 14.
