MEXICO CITY (AP) Leon won the Mexican Apertura final for its sixth first division title after downing America 3-1 in Estadio Azteca on Sunday.
Reigning champion America was attempting to secure its 12th championship to surpass Chivas as Mexico's most successful club, but Leon - which was only promotedto the first division in May 2012 - won 5-1 on aggregate over the two legs of the final after Thursday's first game ended 2-0 to Leon.
Mexico divides each season into two parts, like many Latin America countries, with the Clausura tournament set to start on January 3.
"I don't have words to describe this," said Leon goalkeeper William Yarbrough, who was a contender of man of the match, said after the game. "We deserved it."
Leon took the lead in the 13th, when Argentine Mauro Boselli pulled away from his marker and hit a low shot into the far corner of the goal from the edge of the area.
America came back and failed to convert a number of chances before Leon's Ignacio Gonzalez unwittingly deflected a header into his own net from a Ruben Sambueza cross three minutes before halftime to bring America level.
A comeback seemed possible with America charging forward and Leon stretched, but Gonzalez headed in the right net from a corner to put Leon ahead in the 51st, with Mexico international Francisco Rodriguez sent off for America three minutes later for holding back Matias Britos when he was clear through on goal.
Edwin Hernandez finished off the scoring for Leon with a left foot effort in the 72nd.
