Kushla Dunning again played the vital role in sparking Rosehill College to a hard-fought 50-47 win over Auckland Girls Grammar in their premier basketball clash.

Dunning scored 23 points, backing that with 12 defensive rebounds to spearhead her team's win. Ayla Hoeta was the standout for AGGS.

Despite scoring 17
points, Chevannah Paalvast could not get her Massey High team across the line as they struggled against the impressive Northcote College team, who won 117-56.

Rangitoto beat Westlake GHS 64-60 away.

In premier boys action, Avondale College, led by Benny Anthony, were down by 12 points after the first quarter, but beat Dilworth 80-69.

Dilworth led 24-12 and with strong play from Zach Makavilitogia and Tony Pulu, were in it for a long time.

Westlake BHS too finished strongly in their battle of the Shore to edge Rangitoto College 76-65 after the scores were level with three minutes to play.

Corey Webster top-scored with 22 points. In scoring the last 11 points, WBHS won by that margin.

All premier teams now face a testing week with full rounds on Friday and Monday nights.

Athletics

The popular cross-country championship will be run over the testing St Kentigern College courses this afternoon.

More than 800 runners will go to the line for races over varying distances from 3km (junior girls) to 6km (senior boys).

Curling

The extensive coverage the New Zealand team received in their none-too-successful Winter Olympics campaign has not deterred Auckland school pupils from flocking to the ice in increased numbers.

Even with many teams rebuilding after the departure of senior players, an additional 32 teams have entered the Auckland SS competition.

The upsurge in interest has brought problems however with restricted ice time. Teams are guaranteed only three games in pool play this winter. The top teams will then play sudden death.

The season opened with a high-scoring game as Long Bay Gliders edged Kelston Boys High Ford 9-7. The lead changed several times after Long Bay had scored three on the first end. Kelston replied in like manner on the second. After a see-saw battle, Kelston led 7-5 but gave up four on the last end to go down.

On very keen ice, the other Kelston Boys and Long Bay teams struggled to find their draw weight. The more experienced Long Bay Nuggets beat Kelston Butler 5-1.

In girls' action, Massey Strikers beat Epsom Girls Farley 8-3, scoring two shots on the last two ends.

And in difficult conditions and with the girls struggling to make the house, EGGS Smith beat WGHS Park 4-2.

Kartsport

St Kentigern College are set to dominate again if results from the Auckland championships are a pointer of things to come.

With a first and second in the championships at Auckland's Pallet Company Raceway, St Kentigern took overall honours for the third time in four years, helped by clean-sweeps in the senior 100cc Yamaha Light (Ben Dallas) and 125cc Rotax Max Light (Simon Evans) classes.

Underlining their superiority, a second pairing of Scott Fountain and Andrew Waitt tied for second overall with Mt Albert Grammar's Alan Dunkley and Dillon Grant.

Interest now switches to the national schools championships in Blenheim on July 8-9.

Multisport

The strength of Auckland schools is reflected in the selection of New Zealand teams named to contest the July 30 World Duathlon Championships in Newfoundland, Canada.

Rangitoto College seventh-former Rebecca Spence will lead the Kiwi challenge as she tries to defend the title she won last year.

Joining Spence are schoolmates Kate Mitchell and Scott Buswell. Others from Auckland schools are Sian Walker (Diocesan), and Ryan Sissons (Macleans). Other pupils Isobel Light (Palmerston North Girls), Emma Peterson (St Peters, Cambridge) and Tama Christensen (Freyberg High) will be joined by Renee Holtom (ex-Howick College), Brendon Blacklaws (Wellington) and Tom Francis (Wanganui).

Rugby

With both teams scoring three tries, goalkicking was the key as Mt Albert Grammar beat Kings College 25-20 - Ray Laulala's boot the difference.

Tangaroa shrugged off the disadvantage of playing a man short for 10 minutes in each half to beat Kelston 15-12. Kelston scored tries both times Tangaroa had a player in the bin before Tangaroa hit back to win with a last-minute try.

Sacred Heart led Tamaki College 3-0 at halftime, capping a strong performance with one successful penalty.

The failure to convert two other such opportunities cost them a 9-0 lead.

Tamaki hit back early in the second spell with a Tomuhine Halanukonuka try converted by Kaniata Halanukonuka. A second try, dotted down by Efi Te-o following a chip kick, and a converted 80m intercept try for Ateli Pakalani sealed it.

Ken Griffen marked his debut for Auckland Grammar with two tries and helped his team to a 14-8 win over St Pauls. Ash Moeke converted both tries as AGS got home with a strong second-half effort.

St Pauls hit back with a try from a long-range counter-attack.

St Peters continued their winning start to the season with a hard-fought 10-8 victory over Otahuhu. Captain Peter Saili opened the scoring and Sam Nash converted. The teams exchanged penalties before Otahuhu grabbed a late unconverted try.

Led by their five-eighths pairing of Kelekolio Hifo and Faiga Vaega, De La Salle got home 25-12 over St Kentigern. In the forwards inspirational captain Fa'atiga Lemalu too played a key role.

In top-of-the-table North Harbour action, Westlake Boys won the battle of the only unbeaten teams in swamping Takapuna Grammar 33-0.

Westlake now lead by three points from Massey who beat Rangitoto 21-0.

Soccer

Like Mt Albert Grammar before them, Auckland Grammar found promoted McLeans a handful before getting home 3-2, the same score in their opening round loss to MAGS.

AGS were given a dream start when Jacob Mathews scored after just 16 seconds. Diego Rinquest made it 2-0 with a few minutes. Macleans got one back in the 16th minute and were given a further advantage two minutes later when Mathews was sent off.

Chikara Morimoto increased Auckland Grammar's lead to 3-1 five minutes into the second spell. A late Macleans goal closed the gap.

John Niyonsaba (2) and Tom Spragg scored for Kings in their 3-0 win over Rangitoto.

Westlake Boys were untroubled in beating St Kentigern 6-0 in a game brought forward two days to allow WBHS to play, and win, their first round Chatham Cup match.

MAGS too began with a win and will have to catch-up on their postponed clash with St Peters.
