LONDON - John Terry is hoping to regain the England captaincy, having lost it in February following newspaper allegations about his private life.
Terry had expected to go to this year's World Cup in South Africa as captain. But England coach Fabio Capello gave the armband to Rio Ferdinandafter reports the Chelsea defender had an affair with the former partner of then England teammate Wayne Bridge.
Terry, who has remained silent about the allegations, said in a BBC interview on Saturday that it was hard to lose the captaincy.
"When I had the meeting with the manager, it was obviously difficult to take," Terry said. "But at the same time I respected him and I told him that nothing changes, I'll still give 100 per cent. I took it on the shoulders and moved on, there's no point in dwelling on it.
"The only way I can go about my business is to play well, hopefully be in the side at the World Cup, and hopefully one day get (the captaincy) back."
Terry is also frustrated at some critics who have claimed the allegations had affected his form on the field.
"Going back to what's been reported, people say it's been a tough season for me and I have been stressed and had things on my mind. There's only one person who can come out and say that - and that's me," Terry said. "It baffles me that people can say how I'm feeling or what I must be feeling, and only I know that and I keep that private between myself and my family and my close friends around me. So when people sort of come out with it, it does frustrate me a little bit."
