Football: 'F*** me, I'm crying' - English fans react to rollercoaster World Cup win over Colombia

In a World Cup of surprises, England provided the latest by finally winning a penalty shootout.

England ended a drought in World Cup shootouts to beat Colombia 4-3 on penalties and advance to a quarterfinal match against Sweden.

Yerry Mina's header in the third minute of stoppage time for Colombia made it 1-1 at the end of regulation, and extra time was scoreless.

Eric Dier scored the decisive kick to end a run off five successive tournament exits on penalties, including the 2006 World Cup — the last time England reached the last eight.

Here's how English fans, pundits and legends reacted to the rollercoaster match.

40th minute: England 0-0 Colombia - Wilmar Barrios "headbutts" Jordan Henderson

The half ended contentiously when Barrios appeared to headbutt Henderson while the players were forming a wall for a free-kick. Referee Mark Geiger subsequently showed Barrios a yellow card.

BBC pundit Danny Murphy: "It has to be a red card. That is ridiculous. What is the point having VAR if someone headbutts someone in the face and does not get sent off? You can't headbutt someone and not get a red card. That is ludicrous."

BBC pundit Chris Waddle: "I don't think Wilmar Barrios meant to headbutt him on the chin. I think he meant to push him in the chest and then it rode up into Jordan Henderson's head. However, it could have been a red card."

Yellow card for a headbutt. You have to be kidding.

A yellow card for a head butt? #ENGCOL

— Alan Shearer (@alanshearer) July 3, 2018

Zidane got a straight red for doing this. pic.twitter.com/FBvi7e5VuZ

— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) July 3, 2018

That was a deliberate headbutt, has to be a red card & penalty.
VAR can't save us from referees who consult but still get it wrong.
Terrible decision. #ENGvCOL

— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) July 3, 2018

Half-time: England 0-0 Colombia

England had the better attacking opportunities but failed to really test David Ospina in the Colombian goal.

Jesse Lingard fired over the bar for England from a good position near the end of the half.

England's defense largely contained Colombia, with the South American team failing to create any clear-cut opportunities to score.

Murphy: "It has been frustrating and not capitalising on our good moments, but we have been in control largely. The more I see this game, I think of Jamie Vardy's pace to run in behind. There are really good options on the bench."

BBC pundit Terry Butcher: "This game is absolutely lightning quick and they are zipping the ball about. But sometimes when the ball goes up to the striker it has to stick, because then Colombia will have problems.

One of the Colombian coaches has just bumped his shoulder into Raheem Sterling as he walked off. They are trying to wind the England players up, and we have to be prepared for that."

Colombia are tough and streetwise. They want to win too and will do what it takes. England players must keep their heads. It’s a World Cup, it’s bloody hard. Mental strength is everything.

England's best No10 is Kane. Kane behind Kane would be perfect. Amazed no England manager has tried it

57th minute: England 1-0 Colombia - Harry Kane (penalty)

Harry Kane scored from the penalty spot to give England a 1-0 lead.

Carlos Sanchez tackled Kane to the ground at a corner and referee Mark Geiger awarded the penalty, though there was a long delay as Colombian players pleaded with him to reconsider.

Against a chorus of whistles from Colombian fans, Kane hit the penalty down the center in the 58th minute for his sixth goal of the tournament, stretching his lead at the top of the scoring standings. Three of those were penalties.

Butcher: "Carlos Sanchez has picked Harry Kane up at the back post and was having a wheelbarrow race with the England striker before dumping him on the floor. One or two of the Colombian players look like they are roughing up the penalty spot with their boots."

Murphy: "It's not difficult, but it's been coming. I don't like to use the word 'stupid', but in this tournament we are seeing stupid decisions from players."

Waddle: "I don't think the referee is having a good game but he got that decision right. David Ospina has dived early and Harry Kane has placed it straight down the middle. England deserve it but the referee is spoiling the game."

Yeeessssssss @HKane boooommmm 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 #ENGCOL #Russia2018

93rd minute: England 1-1 Colombia - Yerry Mina

Yerry Mina's header in stoppage time for Colombia leveled the score at 1-1 and forced extra time.

Mina rose above Harry Maguire to score with a bouncing header in the third minute of stoppage time, and the referee blew for the end of 90 minutes soon after.

Murphy: "It is a bizarre goal. I am not sure if the ball skipped off the grass, but Kieran Trippier misjudged it."

Waddle: "I can't believe it. England had done their jobs and they have been well disciplined. But Yerry Mina gets above Harry Maguire and he heads it down into the ground. We know he is their main man - why didn't we put two men on him? What a bad goal to give away."

— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) July 3, 2018

That’s Mina ...England don’t deserve that..

— Chris Sutton (@chris_sutton73) July 3, 2018

Full-time: England 1-1 Colombia

Waddle: "I hope Colombia get a hefty fine with whatever happens in this game. I feel sorry for the referee who should have been waving red cards instead of yellow ones.

England have played well but they have been wasteful. You know their threat from set-plays - put two men on him. And they don't. Anything can happen now."

Last time England won a World Cup game beyond 90 minutes was quarter final against Cameroon in 1990. Come on lads.

— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) July 3, 2018

First half of extra-time: England 1-1 Colombia

Murphy: "England have got to get on the ball, get some passes and calm down. I think Gareth Southgate needs to get some more substitutes on. There are a lot of tired legs out there."

Waddle: "Colombia are really pumped up and the crowd are behind them after that late equaliser. England look flat.

Colombia are dominating the game now. Where have the England players gone? It's only the back three that are getting on the ball, and they are giving it away cheaply.

Now you're looking for leaders. They thought they were in the quarter-final and then they give a goal way. Colombia have been rejuvenated."

Second half of extra-time: England 1-1 Colombia

Murphy: "Eric Dier and England are not going to get a better chance than that. It was a free header."

Butcher: "Eric Dier didn't get up high enough to guide that header on target. Any higher and it is 2-1."

Time for cool calm heads. Come on boys stick to what you have practiced. #pens #ENGCOL

— Alan Shearer (@alanshearer) July 3, 2018

Somehow, and it's not in the rules but it will still happen, Southgate is going to run up in his waistcoat and score the winning penalty

England win 4-3 on penalties

Murphy: "It was deserved, make no mistake, it was deserved. Well done every one of them. We will learn a lot from that game."

Waddle: "When Jordan Henderson misses, you think: 'Here we go again.' Then Eric Dier goes up with a cool head and hands England the win. I was really hoping Colombia did not go through after that performance.

They will be very confident for the next game. In certain parts of the pitch, they weren't ruthless enough and they need to work on that final delivery. But up until the final third, they were very good again."

Butcher: "What a feeling. Remember where you were when we actually won a penalty shootout. I was jumping around when Eric Dier put that penalty in.

Colombia caused England problems when they started to play but it was good for football to see us go through tonight. A lot of England fans behind me are all singing: 'It's coming home.'"

BBC Pundit Chris Sutton: "I think England are in with a chance. I don't think England played particularly well. But this is knockout football so it does not matter how you win."
