Former All White Aaron Clapham's road to recovery after suffering a sickening head knock during the ISPS Handa Premiership final will start with the tedious drive home from Auckland to Christchurch.
The midfielder was taken to hospital after an accidental knee to the head by Andre de Jong left himunconscious during Team Wellington's loss to Eastern Suburbs at North Harbour's QBE Stadium.

Posting an update to Twitter today, the 32-year-old said he had been cleared to travel by car and would have to start the long road trip home to receive further treatment.
"Overwhelmed by positive messages, much appreciated! I have been cleared to travel by car so started the long journey back to Christchurch to see my family and continue to be assessed there," he wrote.

Clapham went on to thank his team-mates with special mention to Team Wellington sports scientist James Mac Aodhagáin, who Clapham said had not left his side since the accident.

Team Wellington's loss marked the first national league title win in 48 years for Eastern Suburbs.
The win also secured Suburbs a place in next season's Oceania Champions League for the first time alongside minor premiers Auckland City.
