French international Mathieu Valbuena was so loved by his Marseille football club that his No. 28 shirt was retired when he departed for Russian club Dinamo Moscow.
But when Valbuena returned to France after just one season and signed for Marseille's rivals Lyon, allhell broke loose.
When Lyon played their Ligue 1 match at Marseille this week, the home fans hung an effigy of their former hero in the stands.
He was greeted by a banner stating: 'True Marseillais only play for OM, you are nothing but a traitor.' The Independent reported that he was booed and jeered, and "Marseille players handed him some rough treatment".
With Lyon leading through a penalty, the referee had to stop the game when the crowd threw bottles at Valbuena as he tried to take a corner kick. The game was delayed for 20 minutes and resumed with riot police around the pitch.
