Auckland football match attack: 23-year-old charged over broken jaw

A 23-year-old man has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after allegedly breaking someone’s jaw after a football match.

Police were called to Sunnynook Park on Auckland’s North Shore around 1.30pm on June 28 after a scuffle between players from two unnamed teams.

The victim was allegedly punched in the face and fell to the ground before being kicked by the same person.

They suffered serious facial injuries, including a broken jaw that required surgery.

Police said they arrested a 23-year-old yesterday who will appear at the North Shore District Court on Friday.

Waitematā east area prevention manager, acting Inspector Tim Williams said police will continue to take “stern action” against assaults on sports fields.

“This type of violent behaviour is unacceptable and we will hold people accountable for their actions,” Williams said.
