Soccer: Wood misses costly penalty

All Whites striker Chris Wood's second-half penalty miss cost Brighton dearly in their English League One soccer match against Southampton today (NZT).

The match ended in a scoreless draw, after Wood's 67th minute penalty was cleared by Southampton keeper Kelvin Davis.

Brighton still top the table on 36 points, with 10 wins from 18 matches, four points clear of second-placed Charlton.

Last week, Wood scored on debut for Brighton, slotting home from the penalty spot in a 2-2 draw with Bristol Rovers.

The 18-year-old joined Brighton on loan until January 3 after a loan deal with second-tier Barnsley was terminated earlier this month by mutual consent.

Wood, who was a substitute in New Zealand's three matches at the World Cup in South Africa this year, was initially loaned to Barnsley by his English Premier League club West Bromwich Albion earlier this season.

He made seven appearances at Barnsley but did not score a goal.
