Earlier New Zealand had almost suffered a nightmare start, when a defensive mix up almost led to a calamitous own goal in the seventh minute.

The ball rolled towards the line, after a deflection off Tommy Smith wrong footed Stefan Marinovic, following a Peru long ball.

But the goalkeeper recovered, to swat it away just before it crossed the line.
