Blistering rides carried Myron Simpson (St Kentigern) and Wellington's Rachel Mercer to clean sweeps and overall honours at the New Zealand Secondary Schools individual cycling championships.

The pair won their under-16 boys' and under-17 girls' titles with shut-out victories in their criteriums, individual time trials and hillclimbs.

Simpson followed his win in the 15-lap (18km) criterium on Saturday afternoon with two record-breaking rides on Sunday. His 5m 29.50s for the 4km time trial smashed the 5m 41.47s record Matt Burgess set last year.

He returned a short time later for the 800m climb up Mt Wellington, powering up the testing climb in 1m 42.50s to clip almost 6s from the time set five years ago by James Elvery.

Mercer won the criterium and then turned in a record-breaking 6m 09.80s time trial, breaking the 6m 10.26s record set a year ago by Rushlee Buchanan (St Peters School), who won the under-20 title but without winning any of the three disciplines.

The championships have attracted some big names, including Sarah Ulmer, who won in 1992.

Debbie Tanner, who made her name in multisport, won in 1998-99. Her six-year-old hillclimb record of 2m 14.30s was beaten by New Plymouth's Kerri-Anne Torckler who recorded 2m 12.50s.

Shem Rodger stepped up from the intermediate grade he won last year to spearhead a Cambridge High one-two in the senior (under-20) championship. He beat Ryan Wills, who won the criterium and was second in the time trial, after Wills could manage only 19th on the hill.

Athletics

Kelsi Patterson (Pakuranga College) and Annie Keown (Auckland Girls Grammar) continued their winter-long battle when they finished one-two in the Auckland secondary Schools cross-country championships at St Kentigern College.

Keown won the Grand Prix race earlier in the year but was beaten by Patterson at the national championships in Wanganui. In the Auckland championship Patterson took the intermediate title by 11s, with Baradene's Bridget Lenting half a minute back in third.

Keown's younger sister Esther completed the Grand Prix-Auckland double with her comfortable win over Victoria Forster (Diocesan) in the junior race.

Orewa's Laura Johnson was a popular winner of the senior race but she needed to call on all her reserves to hold off the gallant challenge from the third of the Keown sisters, Grace, who took second. Renee Kraakman was a close-up third.

Auckland Grammar's Mathew Milden-Hall headed the senior boys field over 6km, winning comfortably from Lewis Jenkins (Birkenhead) and Ryan Sissons (Macleans). Auckland Grammar School won the three and six-person teams races.

Biruk Belachew and Fatalow Zomo were first and second for Mt Roskill Grammar in the intermediate race over 4km, spearheading their victory in the three-person team's race and second behind Auckland Grammar in the six-person contest.

Jonathan Jackson (Glendowie) had a good win in the juniors, heading St Kentigern's Gavin Haslip over 4km. Auckland Grammar dominated the teams events.

Basketball

The Auckland title behind them, the Westlake BHS basketballers now turn their attention to the national finals in Napier later this month.

"We have never won the national title," said Westlake coach Mark Jackson. "There will be some good teams there and it will be hard. The boys had a couple of days off after the Auckland final but are now back into training."

Thomas Abercrombie played a key role in Westlake's 84-65 win over Auckland Grammar in the premier final. His 12 points and 12 rebounds were solid support for Corey Webster, who scored 29 points in a man-of-the-match performance.

The opening quarter was marked by poor shooting from both teams. Auckland Grammar closed the gap in the second quarter but lost their chance when Westlake dominated the third, with Webster leading the charge. Warwick Siddall and Tony Wallbutton scored 16 points each.

Avondale College made it six in a row with their 76-42 win over Rosehill College in the girls' final.

Rosehill pressed hard in the early stages, holding Avondale to just seven points at halftime. That effort told however and Avondale pulled away to win comfortably.

League

St Pauls College withstood a strong start from Aranui High, battling their way to an 18-10 win in the national tournament final in Christchurch.

After the home side forced errors and dominated early play, St Pauls hit top gear when fullback Tuu Maori ran the length of the field to score a try. Aranui responded with a converted try and a 6-4 halftime lead.

Tries to flying winger Morgan Salesa and Pita Godinet, both converted by captain Scott James, put St Pauls in control. St Pauls, 16-6 ahead, held on until late in the game when they conceded a try but had the last say with a James penalty.

James, Mataika Vatuvei, Mua Faanunu, Alvi Tavana, Maori, Salesa and Godinet were named in the tournament team.

In the third-fourth play-off, Otahuhu College beat Kelston BHS.

Multisport

More than 100 individuals and teams will this Saturday contest the ASB Bank Secondary Schools championships, held for the fifth year at McLarens Falls, near Tauranga.

Rangitoto College's Rebecca Spence and Kate Mitchell, who are preparing for the world duathlon championships, will be absent from the senior girls' race (4km kayak, 10km mountain bike, 5km run). It should be dominated by Diocesan pupils Courtney McConnichie and Sophie Hewitt, one-two in the Auckland championship, and Alex Gibson, who missed the Auckland race because of exams.

Ryan Sisson (Macleans) and Thomas Hahn (St Peters) will lead the Auckland challenge in the senior boys' race with Hahn chasing the rare trifecta of the duathlon, triathlon and multisport titles.

Weightlifting

Chantal Lambrechs put in another record-breaking effort at the New Zealand secondary schools and age group championships in Te Kauwhata.

In the under-16 69kg class, the Glenfield College pupil snatched 54kg and added 67kg in the clean and jerk for a 121kg total and her 16th record of the year. She was named the girls lifter of the tournament with her total which was 11kg better than the winner of the 75+kg class managed.

Jonathan MacFarlane (Macleans), a novice lifter, was impressive in the under-18 open (105+kg) class as he, too, broke records in all disciplines including the day's only 100+kg snatch when he hoisted 108kg.

Justin Lamb (Te Kauwhata) won the under-16 62kg division and was the under-16 lifter of the tournament. The teams contest was won by Auckland Grammar.
