With the emphasis as much on having fun as winning, 800 pupils played in another hugely-successful junior kilikiti tournament at the Auckland Domain.

Forty teams of 20 turned up for the annual Milo Auckland SS championship played in four divisions with Kelston Boys High and McAuley High taking the A grade boys' and girls' titles respectively.

In one of the hardest-fought games of the day, McAuley just edged a spirited Epsom GGS team in the final with Auckland GGS and Westlake GHS sharing third. In the girls' B grade final, Mt Roskill GS beat Marist College in the final leaving Lynfield College and Onehunga HS to share third.

The boys' A grade was won comfortably by Kelston BHS, who were too strong for De La Salle in the final with Lynfield again sharing third place with Sacred Heart.

De La Salle beat Manurewa High School in the boys' B grade final with Onehunga and neighbours Mt Roskill sharing third.

ATHLETICS

The next wave of New Zealand track and field talent will be in Auckland this weekend for the annual NZSS championships at Ericsson Stadium.

More than 1500 competitors will contest a full track and field programme on Saturday and Sunday and Sunday morning's road races in Panmure.

Auckland

Kings College got up by the barest of margins to take the 1A one-day title from Mt Albert Garmmar at Cornwall Park yesterday.

Sent in, Kings scored 226-9 but Mt Albert were then given a reduced target of 199 which they failed to reach by four runs in a match which went down to the last ball.

The 1B final was just as close with Rangitoto College hanging on to beat Howick College by five runs with three balls to spare.

Waikato

Runs were at a premium in an absorbing finale to the Waikato 1st XI one-day championship.

Sent in, Hillcrest High were soon battling after getting a flying start as Leandre Scheepers hit 17 off just 12 balls.

But he was out to a magnificent catch by Andrew Sclater and the innings got the stutters.

The best Hillcrest partnership was the 30 scored for the fourth wicket between Nick Trebilcock (23) and Oliver Leydon-Davis (18).

Anton Kivell was the best bowler with 4-37 off his 10 overs.

St Peters slumped to 25/3 and were steadied by a captain's knock of 35 by Sclater. But Sclater was trapped leg before by leg-spinner David Stewart and the team collapsed to 97/7.

Fraser Kilgour, batting at nine, joined Peter Vorster (20) in a crucial 41-run partnership before Vorster fell leg before to James Baker.

Needing nine runs with two wickets in hand, Kilgour lofted a ball over mid-wicket to tie the scores and then hit the winning runs.

Matamata College dismissed Cambridge High for 106 and went on to win the third-fourth play-off by seven wickets.

In the plate final St Johns College made 226 and then dismissed Te Awamutu College for 145.

Gillette Cup

Interest now switches to this weekend's national final with Christchurch BHS, Howick College, Tauranga Boys College and Rathkeale College meeting at Palmerston North's Fitzherbert Park.

Howick College is only the second co-ed school to make it to the finals.

SOFTBALL

Penrose High won the girls' division one title in the one-day tournament at Rosedale Park 9-1 over Auckland GGS in the final.

Kelston BHS won the boys final 8-6 over St Peters College. Selwyn won the boys second division.

TOUCH

The cream of Auckland junior talent, the top 12 boys and girls teams, were in action in the season-ending championship at the Mt Wellington War Memorial Reserve.

After two pool games and three in post-section, Tangaroa College (boys) and Papakura High (girls) emerged victorious.

Papakura won the girls' title without too many problems. After 10-3 and 12-3 romps over Baradene and McAuley High in pool play, Papakura also raced through post-section, with the only close call their 4-1 semifinal win over Auckland Girls Grammar.

Papakura were too strong in the final, beating Westlake Girls.

Tangaroa dropped an early point when held 3-3 by Rosmini but bounced back to beat Kelston Boys to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Rosmini too bounced back from that early draw to win through to a second clash of the day with Tangaroa in the final, which Tangaroa won 5-3.

Attention now switches to the three-day Century Foundation national SS tournament in Napier this weekend.

The top 48 teams from around the country will contest the boys, girls and mixed championships at Park Island.

Kelston Boys, Papakura High (girls) and Tangaroa College (mixed), who all won in 2002-03-04, will chase fourth titles. Teams from Invercargill to Kaikohe in the north will be in action.

WAKA AMA

There was disappointment for the Waka Ama (outrigger canoes) junior crews at Orakei Basin yesterday morning when, due to a misunderstanding, there was no water for them to race on.

They could have waited for the tide to fill the basin but that would have been too late for racing to be completed.

The first attempt to hold the championship a few weeks ago was also dashed when the water at the Onehunga Basin was deemed too foul for racing.
