Markus Goh helped Auckland Grammar come from behind to win the 72-arrow inter-school teams archery final at Nicholson Park over the weekend.

Ten teams from six schools competed in the final having qualified the previous weekend.

Over the past five years, Auckland Grammar and Kings College have battled it out for the title which was again the case this year.

The teams final was divided into quarters, Kings College opened strongly with a 596-point first quarter, 11 points better than Grammar with St Peters a further two points behind.

By halftime Kings, led by experienced club archer Toshi Sekikawa, had increased their lead by nine points over Grammar and St Peters who were tied.

Goh, the day's top scorer, helped Grammar close to within four points with one 18-arrow 25m match to go.

A downpour of rain split the fleet during the final quarter. Grammar coped with the break better than their rivals, coming through with a 53 point win.

Diocesan were the best performed all girls team, finishing fifth.

In the individual competition, Goh won the novice boys' section, Joe Gaffney, also from Grammar, won the boys' open recurve section, while Baradene's Marissa Gloyne won the girls' novice section.

Two more events are scheduled at the end of terms two and three.

Kings College were crowned Auckland Gillette Cup representatives, beating St Kentigern College in the final by 131 runs at Eden Park.

Kings batted first and scored a tidy 215, thanks to a solid innings from Jonathon Bassett-Graham, who scored 66.

When Bassett-Graham was dismissed at 140-5 the Kings innings was looking shaky, but all-rounder Tim Southee's 45 steered them towards 200.

The St Kents bowlers applied the pressure throughout the innings, with Nick Seymour (3-28) and Jono Hickey (2-20) providing the best returns.

Chasing 215, St Kents reply was steady, as they worked their way to 50 for the loss of only one wicket.

However, the introduction of left arm spinner Chris Goldsbury resulted in three rapid lbws and they collapsed from 50-1 to 56-8.

In the end, St Kents was dismissed for 84 in 19.5 overs, giving Kings a comfortable 131 run win.

The victory means Kings College will represent the Auckland region in the national Gillette Cup finals tournament in Palmerston North in December.

VOLLEYBALL

McAuley High and Westlake Boys were the best placed Auckland teams at the national secondary schools' championships in Palmerston North.

The schools finished third equal - McAuley in the division 1 girls and Westlake in division 1 boys.

In the Division 2 competition, Rangitoto beat Bethlehem College to win the girls' section and Sir Edmond Hillary Collegiate defeated Kamo High to take home the boys title. Tangaroa College were winners of the boys' division 3 title.

WATER POLO

Rangitoto College won the national schoolboys' championships for the third time in Wellington over the weekend, beating Westlake 6-3 in the final.

Rangitoto were in control of the match throughout as they raced out to a 4-1 lead over the current North Island champions.

Auckland schools filled six of the top eight placings, with Auckland Grammar losing to Wellington College in the bronze medal playoff while Sacred Heart took sixth place ahead of Rosmini and Massey High.

Rangitoto's Scott Taylor was judged best defensive player with fellow teammate Jamie Treweek taking the best defensive award and Auckland Grammar's Michael Parr the best goalkeeper award.

Rangitoto Girls will try to make it a double at the national schoolgirls' championships in Lower Hutt this week.

Rangitoto won the Auckland Championship final during the weekend with a 10-6 win over Diocesan while Westlake Girls beat Epsom Girls for the bronze medal.

Manurewa High picked up the top school award at the national championships, winning three titles on Rotorua's Lake Okareka

More than 1000 competitors from 67 secondary schools took part in the event.

Tukutahi Happy from Rutherford High won the under-19 boys' W1 title in 1m 05.16s just ahead of Te Tahiwi Magner from Hillcrest High who finished in 1m 05.28s.

Akinihi Cooper from Selwyn College took out the girls' under-19 W1 championship with a time of 1m 18.16s ahead of Edgewater College's Stina Brebner and Rutherford's Tamara Panapa.
