Epsom Girls Grammar added the Auckland title to their nationals success in the Dragonboat Festival at Auckland's Viaduct on Sunday.

The event for senior students drew participants from 33 schools, of which 19 teams contested the girls division and 14 the mixed division. The time of this year's regatta, which
clashed with several other sporting events, meant there was no boys division.

Epsom's year 13 team won the girls division, edging out the school's year 12 team. Westlake Girls Red were third.

The Epsom year 13 team won the national championships the weekend before in Wellington.

Auckland race organiser Gavin Franicevic said the nationals alternate between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch which means they can be held before some regional events.

"It's something that we are looking at ... trying to get the nationals at the end of the season as opposed to rotating between the festivals."

In the mixed section Kaipara 1 powered their way over the 300m distance in 1m 18.71s. Long Bay College Black were second and Northcote College 2 were third.

Athletics

Records fell left, right and centre at the Counties Manukau championships.

Ryan Sissons of Macleans College took almost 14s off the senior boys 3000m record powering home in 9m 17s.

Stephen Buckley claimed an impressive double winning the senior boys shot put and 400m, setting new records in both.

Sarah Saddleton (Strathallan) won the senior girls high jump with a record of 1.74m while Ben Herangi (Pukekohe High) set a new record in the intermediate boys hurdles.

Michael Whitehead (Waiuku College) won the intermediate boys 3000m in a record 9m 14s while Wayne Ulugia (Wesley) set a new mark in the junior boys hurdles.

Gina Morrisey completed a successful day for Macleans by leaping 10.23m to win the junior girls triple jump.

Plenty of records also fell at the North Harbour championships. Fabian Dupank (Rangitoto) broke the intermediate boys 100m hurdles record and Sam Widderson (Westlake) the junior boys 200m record. Rangitoto's Sophie Healey claimed two records in winning the junior girls 200m and 300m. Simon Manson (Rosmini) and Laura Harder (Pinehurst) broke the open boys and girls 300m records while Takapuna Grammar's Alyx Hodgson claimed the senior boys 400m record.

Cricket

Westlake won the right to represent Auckland in the national secondary schools girls tournament in December.

Westlake edged out Epsom by six runs to win the title at a four-day tournament at Melville Park.

Westlake won the toss and elected to bat. After a steady start from Jo and Katie Perkins and Courtney Manning, they went into the drinks break at 90 for two after 26 overs. Westlake's innings folded for 127 in the 40th over.

Epsom's middle and lower order chipped away at the total but fell six runs short.

Volleyball

A record 24 boys teams and 22 girls teams battled it out in the Auckland senior championships, - a preview to next week's nationals in Christchurch. McAuley overcame a defiant Manurewa 3-0 to close out the girls final while Avondale upset favourites Penrose 3-0 in the boys.
