EQUESTRIAN

Lauren Wadsworth took individual honours in leading her St Cuthbert's College team to win the 23rd Auckland Secondary Schools one-day equestrian event at the Wainui Pony Club grounds.

Wadsworth, 17, was defending the title she won last year. After accumulating 24.29 faults in her dressage test, Wadsworth, the 2005 ASB Equestrian Sportsperson of the Year, went clear in the 2500m (16 jumps) cross-country and showjumping disciplines.

She was headed by school-mate Nicola Peat in dressage but the faults Peat picked up later meant it was left to Minta Smith and Anya Alderslade, who won the equestrian award in 2004, to give St Cuthbert's the team title over the rival 27 teams of four.

Chanel Hargraves (Strathallan College) was right in it after dressage with 22.86 faults but slipped to fourth overall by dropping a couple of rails.

The one-day event, organised by a keen group of grandparents, also served as trials for the North Island Championships, in Hamilton on April 28-29.

Auckland

Mt Albert Grammar overpowered Avondale College to easily pick up the only outright win of the second round.

Sent in at home, MAGS, after a slow start - 31 runs in the first hour for the loss of one wicket - posted an impressive 301/8 declared, led by captain Rocky Khan's 109. Opener David Day scored 73, and lower in the order Marcus Wong-King chipped in with an unbeaten 44.

Avondale struggled to 19/3 by the end of the first day and were eventually out for 49. Following on, they scored 142. They did not help themselves by having their last three batsmen run out, including Charlie Williams who made 33.

King's College took first-innings points from Auckland Grammar.

Resuming at 74/4 in pursuit of the 151 scored by AGS on the first day, King's batted resolutely early, with Tom Talbot and Jonathon Bassett-Graham adding 33 for the fifth wicket.

They then lost Talbot and Andrew de Boorder and Tim Southee, just back from Sri Lanka where they played for NZ under-19, to give the AGS attack some hope. But Bassett-Graham scored 50 not out and King's took the points.

It was first-innings points only for Westlake Boys, too, as they scored an impressive 240/9 declared and then restricted St Kentigern to 162 in reply.

In 1B championship action, Howick College captain Michael Davis stole the show with 169 from 165 balls ( including 24 fours and four sixes) as his team beat Rangitoto College on the first innings.

Waikato

Playing at one of New Zealand's most picturesque grounds was not enough to fire up Cambridge High in their clash with on-form St Peter's.

Batting first after winning the toss at Victoria Square, the home team struggled under the accurate pace of Ben Stinson and Josh Nelson. Cambridge lost opener Jeremy Clayton with the score at 14. Fellow opener Keenan Adlam was joined by captain Jake Bezzant but their fightback was short-lived as the St Peter's attack took control, with three bowlers taking three wickets each, headed by George Fewkes with 3-9.

Cambridge started well, snaring opener Sam Kilgour in the fourth over. But that did not last long as Thomas Wansbone and Fraser Kilgour cashed in on some mediocre fielding to get St Peter's home by seven wickets to retain the Dave Hoskin Trophy and reclaim the Cambridge Town Trophy.

It was an early finish for Te Awamutu College, with allrounder Ben Missen taking centre stage.

First, he skittled the Morrinsville College middle order, bagging 4-30 with his left-arm medium pace as they struggled to 89. He then smacked a smart 53 not out as Te Awamutu cruised to their 90-run target in the 16th over.

Hillcrest won the toss and batted against St John's College. They amassed a tidy 231/6 led by an unbeaten 63 from Chris Jamieson batting at three. Reaching the 30-over mark at 103/3, they raised the tempo to score a total which proved to be beyond their rivals.

St John's opener Aidan Stevenson thrashed 38 off 42 balls, including two sixes and three fours. They reached 63 without loss in 12 overs but that changed quickly as Jack Bruce and Michael Heron came on to bowl.

Heron claimed Stevenson with his first delivery and finished his 10 overs with 4-14 as St John's crashed to all out for 117.

Hamilton Boys got up by five wickets over Fraser High but it could have been much easier given Fraser's dreadful start.

Batting first after winning the toss, Fraser were struggling at 4/7 with Ryan Herbert on a hat-trick. Led by Tuwati Goodwright and Andrew McLean, who both scored 31, and later Casey Hodge who accumulated 67, they reached 183.

Hamilton were almost as bad at the top of their order, losing three for 16 before captain Vaughn Stock and Matthew Turton took the score to 74 before Stock departed. Turton went on to 68 not out and with Anthony Crump (38 not out) got their team home.

MULTISPORT

Honours were well spread in the Auckland SS teams tag triathlon championships, with co-ed and single-sex schools sharing the glory at Maraetai Beach as 170 three-person teams faced the starter.

Macleans College headed the strong challenge from Auckland Grammar and St Kentigern to take the senior boys title. Grammar finished second and fifth (with two other teams in the top eight) while St Kentigern teams were third and fourth.

Rangitoto College scored the most decisive win, with their senior girls team of Rachel Ah Koy (who will swim for Fiji at the Commonwealth Games), Rebecca Spence (who dominated the 20km cycle leg) and Kirsten Montgomery, the national under-16 multisport champion, bringing the team home on the 5km run.

In a minor surprise, the intermediate girls race was won by visiting St Peter's (Cambridge) who finished almost two minutes clear of Diocesan, with Epsom Girls' a further 20s back.

Maraetai hosts the individual triathlon championships on March 21.

WATER POLO

Spurred on by one of the largest crowds at an Auckland secondary schools match, Auckland Grammar surged to the top of their group in the premier boys championship with a highly entertaining 8-5 win over Sacred Heart College.

Long Bay College beat fancied Rosmini 7-2 to now have a shot at a playoff spot. Rangitoto College continued their unbeaten run, with comfortable wins over their second team (round five) and the second Westlake Boys team in round six. Westlake 1 rebounded from their 3-3 draw with Rosmini to wallop Northcote 24-3.

Massey High kept their playoff hopes alive with a hard-fought 9-7 win over Auckland Grammar 2. St Kentigern are also in the hunt after beating Glendowie 10-3.

Rangitoto kept themselves in the premier girls race with big wins. They followed their 11-5 fifth-round victory with a 13-0 shutout over Westlake Girls 2 in the sixth.

Westlake bounced back from their loss to Diocesan in round five to beat St Cuthbert's and hold their place at the top of the table. St Kentigern continued their climb with a close win over Carmel before a 3-3 draw with Mt Roskill Grammar. Massey edged Mt Albert Grammar 8-7 and Epsom Girls beat Carmel 13-4, while Diocesan swamped Avondale 19-1.
