Avondale College sisters Nikki and Carmen Ooi had five wins between them at the Auckland secondary schools individual championships at Waitakere.

Carmen won the intermediate girls 100m individual medley, 100m backstroke and 100m freestyle while younger sister Nikki claimed the junior girls 50m and 100m backstroke. Nikki also picked up
a second place in the 100m individual medley.

More than 90 students from 25 schools took part in the competition at Waitakere's Aquatic Centre on Saturday.

Others who racked up a handful of wins were Kelly Newcombe from Kristin School, who took the senior girls 50 and 100m backstroke, 50m freestyle and was second in the senior girls individual medley.

Massey High School's Jamie Johns won the junior girls 100m individual medley, 50m freestyle, 50m and 100m breaststroke.

Malcolm Richardson from Mt Albert Grammar took the 50m and 100m intermediate boys breaststroke as well as the individual medley.

In the senior boys, Euan Acket from Onehunga High School won the 50m and 100m freestyle. In the junior boys, Mark Turner from Auckland Grammar School won the 50m and 100m backstroke and the 50m freestyle.

Cycling

Wet and windy conditions kept speeds down and times up during the penultimate round of the Auckland secondary school's series.

In the senior competition, St Kentigern and Diocesan cleaned up, confirming their series wins in the boys' and girls' divisions with one race left.

St Kents' win in the junior boys' competition shut Grammar out of the series title, making this week's race a winner-takes-all situation between St Kents and Westlake.

Epsom's first win in the junior girls will not alter the series result, which is already decided in favour of St Cuthberts.

League

St Pauls clinched the Premiere First XIII Shield final, beating Otahuhu College 30-18 at Ericsson Stadium last week.

St Pauls showed plenty of speed and experience from the first whistle, which Otahuhu struggled to counter.

Pita Godinet, Alvin Tavana, Scott Jones, Mataika Vaturei, Tuu Maori all scored tries for St Pauls while Scott Jones kicked five goals.

Avondale College won the Premier First XIII Cup beating Tangaroa College 50-14.

Netball

Eleven teenagers from around New Zealand will meet in Christchurch today for Netball New Zealand's annual youth council meeting.

Netball New Zealand, in conjunction with the Lion Foundation, put together the national youth initiative three years ago to hear from teenagers on issues facing the future of netball in New Zealand.

The girls will also hear from various individuals associated with the sport about the opportunities that exist alongside playing. This year, national umpire Kylie Batchelor will discuss her experiences in the 2005 National Bank Cup and regional manager Jason Watkins will talk about sports administration.

Netball New Zealand game development manager Kate Agnew believes the youth council is a valuable opportunity for communication between the NNZ and the future of the sport.

Orienteering

Westlake Boys High School student Thomas Reynolds claimed the New Zealand Secondary Schools senior boys title with a decisive win over Mt Roskill's Simon Jager in Wanganui.

In the junior boys division, Massey High school had a good run with Matthew Ogden and Gene Beveridge placing third and fifth.

Emily Murphy of MacLeans College won the junior girl's division. In the relays, Auckland Grammar won the senior boy's title by an impressive 8 minutes and after a thrilling battle with Westlake won the intermediate title over Kings College by 20 seconds.

Rugby

Kings College face St Pauls at Kings and Kelston Boys High School square off against Auckland Grammar at Kelston in the semifinals of Auckland's 1A competition at 2.30pm on Saturday.

Kings will go into their encounter with plenty of confidence, having dismissed St Pauls 52-5 in their final round robin game last weekend.

The Kelston and Grammar match is expected to be a lot closer following their hitout last weekend, which Kelston won 13-11, thanks to a late converted try.

De La Salle finished their season on a high beating Otahuhu College 34-20. Mt Albert finished fifth on the table after their 13-3 victory over St Peters College, and Tangaroa finished strongly to beat Tamaki College 15-3.

Soccer

Mt Albert continue to lead the charge in the senior A1 competition, overturning their first round loss to Westlake Boys, winning 2-1.

Auckland Grammar jumped up a spot on the table after trouncing Liston 8-0. Kings College remain third on the table following a 1-0 win over Kelston Boys.

Heading into round three of the Auckland provincial girls championships the teams playing off today for finals spots are Mt Albert against Epsom Girls and Avondale against Macleans College.

The top four teams in the junior grade vying for the finals are Westlake Girls against St Cuthberts and Epsom Girls against Long Bay. Last year's winners, Glendowie College, were knocked out by Long Bay College in the first round.

Softball

Former Penrose High School student Fotina Matatia, 19, has received a scholarship at Butler Community College in Kansas.

Matatia was one of seven students Penrose High School's director of sport Brian Faunt took to a softball camp at the University of Missouri last July.

During that camp Matatia caught the attention of highly regarded American coach Doug Chance and was offered a place at the college.
