Police are reportedly investigating an incident where an unsuspecting woman wandered into the path of a cyclist during an event in the Canary Islands this weekend.
Video of the scary moment has captured the ugly collision which resulted in the injured cyclist being rushed to hospital on Sunday.
The contactbetween the lead rider and the spectator came near the finish line in the Cicloturista Condaca Salmor Bike event in El Hierro — costing the rider a race victory.
News has since emerged that the situation was far more serious for the cyclist, who was taken to hospital in an ambulance after emergency services arrived on the scene.
Footage shows the woman looking at her mobile phone and blindly following a man across the road where she ended up directly in the cyclist's path. The street had been lined with cheering spectators near the finish line.
There was no way for the cyclist to avoid a head-on collision.

Footage from the incident shows the rider flying over the top of his handlebars and the woman taking a brutal tumble, flipping over backwards with her head making heavy contact with the bitumen.
A woman is heard screaming in the seconds after the impact.
She was reportedly treated at the scene, but it remains unclear if the woman required further medical treatment.
The cyclist, who is yet to be identified, was taken to the nearby Hospital Nuestra Señora de Los Reye, suffering a moderate head injury and memory loss.

The region's government-operated emergency services have released a statement about the incident, confirming police have become involved.
"An injured cyclist in El Hierro has been taken to hospital following a collision with another person," the statement read.
"The information we received was that the cyclist had run over another person during a sporting event. The cyclist appeared from a first evaluation to be suffering from non-serious head injuries.
"The woman who had been knocked over was treated at the scene by medical services covering the event.
"A police investigation into the incident is underway."
