Cycling: Cambridge to host World Cup round

New Zealand's rapid rise in the track cycling world will take another leap in December.

Cambridge's Avantidrome will hold a round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup.

Cycling New Zealand boss Andrew Matheson says the hosting of the event probably boils down to their cyclists' recent dominance on the world stage.

"We had a milestone earlier this year with the men's team pursuit winning its first-ever rainbow jersey or gold medal at the world champs.

"And that comes off the back of the men's sprint programme winning the sprint the year before."

Andrew Matheson says they always knew they could host an event like this.

"We're sort-of seeing on a daily basis how successful the Avantidrome is for our high performance riders.

"To cap it off with a fantastic event like this certainly shows the invest from the New Zealand government."
