Two national records were set on the second morning of heats at the New Zealand summer swimming championships in Christchurch yesterday.
North Shore's Cameron Stanley went under his own mark in topping qualifiers in heats of the 200m backstroke, while West Auckland's Michael Jack also bettered his ownrecord in the heats of the 200m freestyle.
Stanley stopped the clock at one minute 54.07 seconds in his heat of the 200m backstroke, 7/10ths under the record he set in Tauranga in June.
He was nearly 5sec faster than the second qualifier, clubmate John Zulch.
Jack, 23, impressed with a strong effort in the 200m freestyle, clocking 1:45.08sec to lower his own national record by 7/100ths of a second.
He set the previous mark at a World Cup meet in Sydney in October when he broke the long-standing record held by Danyon Loader.
He was 5sec ahead of second qualifier Ryan Nolan, of Melbourne, followed by the North Shore trio of Andrew McMillan, Moss Burmester and Matt Thomas.
Others to shine in the heats included Olympians Melissa Ingram in the 400m freestyle and 100m backstroke, Corney Swanepoel in the 50m butterfly, Hayley Palmer in the 50m freestyle and 100m individual medley and Daniel Bell in the 200m individual medley.
Bell broke one New Zealand record last night and equalled another in a strong display.
