Saturday's heart-stopping Black Caps v Australia battle wasn't just the focus of tens of thousands at Eden Park and millions watching on TV.

The game created a Twitter tsunami, with 26 million tweets related to the match recorded during the social media site's live "match window".

It also saw the most amount of money bet with the TAB on a single match in this Cricket World Cup so far.

The Australians, who started the week with odds of $1.67, were at one point during the match getting odds of $8 to win. A bet that might not have been as foolish as it seemed when the game went down to the wire with the Black Caps needing six runs with one wicket in hand.

The match ebbed and flowed with the bookies. The Black Caps' demolition of the Aussie batting line-up and Brendon McCullum's blazing 50 saw betting suspended briefly on the match.

It reopened as the Black Caps' batting line-up collapsed and the Aussies clawed back to $2.40. New Zealand remained as favourites and as Kane Williamson hoisted the ball for the match-winning six they were $1.50 to win.

The most talked-about event was Australian Glenn Maxwell's choking gesture to the crowd as wickets tumbled and pressure mounted on the Black Caps. After Williamson hit the winning six, Maxwell turned and applauded the crowd.

TAB live odds

Leading up to Saturday - Australia opened up during the week at $1.67 with NZ $2.10.

1:40pm - Australia shortened slightly after opening and at the time of the toss, they were $1.62 favourites, New Zealand @ $2.20.

2:10pm - After Finch and Warner got off to a positive start in the first few overs of their innings, they shortened significantly from the initial $1.62, and were as short as $1.33 at one point.

3:00pm - After the first couple of wickets, NZ became favourites- and with each subsequent wicket NZ became firmer and firmer favourites, their odds shortening significantly with each wicket that fell.

5:27pm - After the blazing start NZ got off to on the back of Brendon McCullum's heroics, we suspended the betting on them, as we deemed the true odds of them winning the match even shorter than $1.01.

01 Mar 09:42 PM

5:30pm - At the innings break, NZ were $1.04 favourites, with Australia $8.00

7:17pm - New Zealand remained favourites right until the end of the match. Even when NZ were 9 wickets down and needing 6 runs to win, we were open for betting with NZ @ $1.50, and Australia $2.40.

7:28 - After Boult managed to see of Starc's final two deliveries, we shortened NZ to $1.33, and Australia were $3.00.

Bet count
Single-bets: There were around 5000 bets on New Zealand, and around 2500 bets on Australia in the Head to Head book.
Multi -bets: There were over 3000 multi-bets that included the winner of this match as one of the selections. Most of the multi-bets were running-through NZ (about a 2 : 1 ratio).
